Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy is widely recommended for a variety of personal problems, from anxiety, depression, interpersonal problems, phobias and stress-related disorders. Usually the course of treatment involves learning the relationship between distressing thought patterns and negative moods, problem behaviours or physical symptoms. Every person's thought patterns are different, and their problem issues depend on their history and specific experiences. A therapist provides coaching in alternative thought patterns, and helping to kickstart the change process.
Finding a Therapist
Searching for a therapist can be a challenging process. It is important to find someone with whom the "fit" is good. Research has shown that a good therapist/client relationship is more important than therapist orientation or philosophy in predicting outcome. It may be worth your while to meet with two or three therapists for an initial visit, to see whether their "take" on your issues feels right to you, and that their suggestions for treatment seem on target.
